University of Minnesota modified 960.gs template

  • 12-column grid
    • Each column is 80 pixels wide
      • University has modified grid so columns meet (960.gs has a 10-pixel margin between columns)
    • No padding or margins added to grid columns
      • Padding has been added to individual elements in the CSS
    • 960.gs uses “suffix” and “prefix” styles to add empty space before or after grid unit
      • University modification doesn’t use these styles. If grid unit contains grid children, first child must use class “Alpha” while last child must use class “Omega”
    • University provides three formats of basic 960.gs tempting system
      • 2-6-4 format: 2-column grid for left navigation; 6-column grid for center section; 4-column grid for right section
      • 2-7-3 format: 2-column grid for left navigation; 7-column grid for center section; 3-column grid for right section
      • 3-5-4 format: 3-column grid for left navigation; 5-column grid for center section; 4-column grid for right section
      • Each format includes print.css
        • Assumes main content of page resides in center and right columns
        • Strips left navigation, University header, unit header, unit banner, and unit footer (University footer is retained)
        • Adds block M and University wordmark to upper left corner
        • Option to add unit-specific information to upper right corner
        • Element dimensions
          • University header (required) = 85 pixels tall
          • Unit header = 32 pixels tall
          • Unit banner = 95 pixels tall
          • Unit footer = 32 pixels tall
          • University footer (required) = 70 pixels tall
      • Be sure to update print style with appropriate information
        • Open template in DreamWeaver
        • Turn off CSS—“Toggle Displaying of CSS Styles” icon in top icon bar
        • Edit copy at top of page
    • Create new style sheet at the bottom of the cascade rather than modify the University style sheets/templates
      • Bottom of cascade will override any common element in University style sheets
