As this chapter has shown, no government can ever be completely competent or completely benevolent. The best any of us can do is work to change what’s wrong and ensure that what’s right doesn’t get lost in the process.

America is seen as a shining star for freedom of the press and held up as an example for the rest of the world. The next chapter explores the depths of this myth. Indeed, governmental intrusion on the First Amendment is relatively rare and almost always quickly and appropriately addressed. The same cannot be said for corporate intrusions on our information rights, however. This sphere of intrusion will likely continue to get a lot worse before it gets better.

American media is undergoing unprecedented consolidation pressures, and the range and number of voices are clearly being diminished. The threats to our information rights are coming from a variety of corners, not just government.
