I’ve only taken one plane trip since 11 September 2001, but I’ve been following John Gilmore’s excellent adventure with the American air transportation, security, and justice systems with great interest.
Jeff Jarvis made his most recent flight with two minutes to spare and considers Edward Hasbrouck’s illegal detention and harassment at the hands of janitors representing themselves as security personnel “fetishist” and nothing to be upset about. In fact, Jarvis calls Hasbrouck’s simple question, “But why? Who do you work for? Am I required to open my passport for unidentified strangers?”—which led to the detention and harassment—“numbskullian behavior.”
That Jarvis doesn’t see this as majorly important, from a constitutional perspective, is disturbing but probably not surprising. After all, he made his flight with only two minutes to spare.
