What’s wrong with book publishing

In all the rumpus over the disarray in the music industry, little attention has been paid to book publishing. Lynn Hirschberg has a fascinating account, “Nothing Random,” in the New York Times magazine. The rambling profile of Peter Olson, chairman and C.E.O. of Random House, is fascinating and well worth the read if you’re interested in the future of book publishing. Hirschberg’s account asserts that Olson tried to fire super-editor Sonny Mehta (editor-in-chief of Knopf) and had to settle for the head of Ann Godoff, former publisher and editor-in-chief at “Little Random.”

As the giants of book publishing continue to merge and purge, we can only hope that small, sustainable publishing houses of literary quality emerge in the droppings.

Highly recommended.
