The Twin Cities Media Alliance has launched the Twin Cities Daily Planet, billed as “a community newswire and syndication service.” It’s that alright, but in addition the Daily Planet is a bold experiment in bringing citizens and professional journalists together to create a way, way new kind of journalism. Smart move on the part of Minneapolis and Saint Paul community newspapers, as citizens learn they don’t really need the traditional corporate media to inform themselves.

Funded with a grant from J-Lab, the Institute for Interactive Journalism at the University of Maryland, the community newswire allows anyone to contribute to the corpus of information available on the newswire and syndication service.

This is exactly the kinds of experiments that need to be conducted to explore the future of citizen journalism, with the aim of discovering sustainable business models for local, alternative media.
