The Netscape 6 browser reportedly snoops on users’ search terms. According to this Newsbytes report, Netscape captures the search terms, IP address, the date the browsers oftware was installed, and an identification number of each user. When users use the Search tab or type search terms into the URL field, the captured data is sent to info.netscape.com using a URL forwarding system Netscape says it developed for billing its search engine partners.
Predictably, the privacy policy on Netscape’s website makes no mention of this monitoring activity.
Because of this, and because it’s crappy software, ARTS & FARCES internet will no longer support the Netscape browser. You’re free to continue using it, of course, but we will no longer craft our pages to support its quirks.
We don’t take this action lightly, but currently less than 14% of users accessing this site use the Netscape browsers, and viable alternatives are available.
If you’re looking for an alternative to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, have a look at Opera.
