Maybe there’s something to Fon after all

When the Fon guerrilla PR tide rolled in last month I pretty much ignored it except to roll out the disclosure box. Truth is, my assessment was pretty much the same as Glenn Fleishman’s: just another paid hotspot aggregator. But he articulated it very well and I had nothing to add, so I didn’t.

But this morning David Weinberger points to a likely unintended consequence that could be very positive. Martin Varsavsky, Fon CEO, wants to have all the Fon routers mesh. That’s potentially huge for community networks, possibly leading to what Weinberger is calling the “neighborhood effect.” As more things return to the local sphere, those things get more interesting.
