The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has used a sting operation to catch seven spammers who distributed deceptive chain letters. The government agency settled with the seven individuals, and the terms of the settlement were not disclosed. The settlement includes a permanent injunction barring the spammers from promoting any Ponzi scheme and misrepresenting earnings from any marketing scheme. While spam itself is not illegal, deceptive spam is.
This settlement is the result of years of investigation by the FTC and its spam collecting activities. The FTC encourages U.S. citizens to forward unsolicited bulk email to it at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and claims it has collected more than eight million such email messages since 1998 and currently receives about 10,000 emails each day.
