Heads up to some Hasten down the wire changes now running public beta 2 of ExpressionEngine which looks like a final release candidate….

New features include:

  • simple search (searches only titles) and advanced search which links to a new search template that’s pretty dang impressive; both are over there in the right shoulder box
  • updated templates for the RSS/RDF 1.0, RSS 2.0, and Atom 0.3 XML syndication feeds (the Atom feed actually validates now)
  • pagination for both articles and comments; this is especially useful in the Information Eclipse section because it lets you read the work sequentially
  • pagination between fields will allow longer essays to be presented in a more visually pleasing manner
  • PHP code can be parsed either before or after template rendering (woot! now I can screw things up coming and going)
  • related entries tag (this one still needs a little work to be really useful, so it’s hidden from most users)
  • the referrer module has been improved significantly and includes a blacklist (only registered, logged-in users see the referrers link)
  • moderation capabilities have been added to the article comments (only registered, logged-in users can post comments)
  • access to content can be restricted based on user class (this one has been available since public beta 1, but I’ve only recently sufficiently figured it out; interesting things will start to happen when the pMachine team releases the ecommerce module)
  • the database caching has been improved noticeably
  • lots of minor bug fixes, mostly in the back-end functions

There’s still quite a bit to do. Next up is integrating the user module and search style sheets with the main system style sheet.

Maybe tomorrow….

  1. Well, it looks like the date functions of all the syndication feeds are still incorrect. I’m in the U.S. Central Standard Time (CST) zone and all three feeds are off by -6 hours, indicating that the feeds are set for Universal Time (UTC). Yuck. Makes my syndication feeds six hours in the past. Like Max Headroom in reverse.
