On Tuesday of this week, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Disctrict of Columbia, seeking the release of Office of Homeland Security records related to identity cards issued by the federal government.
The EPIC lawsuit alleges that the government is creating a system for national identification cards behind closed doors. EPIC filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for records related to systems and programs designed to identify individuals on 20 March and claims that the Office of Homeland Security has yet to respond to the request.
A spokesperson for the Office of Homeland Security told various media outlets that the agency is not considering a national identification card system.
