According to a study published in the April issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, vitamin D injections improve survival rates for all end-stage renal disease patients on dialysis, not just those with elevated parathyroid hormone levels as is currently recommended.

Dr. Ravi Thadhani, director of clinical research at Massachusetts General Hospital’s nephrology department studied more than 50,000 US dialysis patients, finding that 76 percent receiving vitamin D injections survived, compared with 59 percent of patients who did not receive the injections. Thadhani’s study indicated greater survival rates even among patients with elevated calcium and phosphorus levels; patients for whom vitamin D is usually discontinued.
