Back to the Mac

MacBook ProAs long-time readers will remember, I was a Mac user from the beginning until Windows 2000 came out. At that point I could no longer afford the pre-OS X nearly continual crashes and lock-ups. I’ve been using Windows laptops ever since and currently use an IBM Thinkpad T42p. This Thinkpad is the best computer I’ve ever owned (if the PowerBook 180c had better battery life it’d be a close call).

I’m going back to the Mac for a whole bunch of reasons, most of which make sense only to me. It’s certainly not because I think Apple’s a qualitatively better company—I don’t, but that’s not the point. One reason for my return that will make sense to a lot of folks is that my excuse for not doing so earlier—can’t run Project and Visio—no longer applies. The refreshed 15-inch MacBook Pro with the Santa Clara chipset, LED screen, and faster front-side bus makes the decision easy.

Having spent a minimal amount of time assessing my software needs I’ve hit one brick wall that I’m hoping you can address. Is there a Mac equivalent of the filehippo.com update client? I know it’s a pain in the ass to register for comments, so feel free to email me at mfraase at farces.com.
