Amy Wohl is an old-timer, writing about technology in the enterprise for what seems like forever. Her latest newsletter covers the issue of using weblogs for knowledge management within the enterprise. Unfortunately, because of the way she’s structured her site, that link will go dark as soon as she releases her next issue.

After having spent the last 18 months as an independent contractor deep in the bowels of a Fortune 100 IT department, I can readily attest to the information gatekeeping problem inherent in most enterprises. Employees have spent their entire careers protecting what they know, doling it out only when it enhances their perceived positions. This is why information moves so slowly in large organizations (and maybe also why rumors move so fast).

Wohl suggests matching experts’ weblogs with a spidering index system and then running that index against an organizational taxonomy. Additionally, users could actively rate the weblog information based on its usefulness, adding credibility to the mix and allowing others within the organization to skim the informational cream.

Good piece.
